Christmas Windows

Christmas windows are a traditional part of New York City during the holidays. Every year the famous department stores decorate their storefront windows with holiday themes. People come from far and wide to gaze at the dreamy scenes.

2013 Christmas Windows

Lord & Taylor

Lord and Taylor Christmas Windows

Theme: Vintage New York

The Lord & Taylor windows this year take on a vintage theme with displays featuring joyous holiday experiences. The windows are full of charming old-timey scenes of people celebrating the holidays: men and women dressing up, couples enjoying an evening out, good food and shopping, and a family visiting Santa.

Store Location: Fifth Avenue and 39th Street

While you're in the area...Combine your visit to the Lord & Taylor windows with a trip to the nearby Bryant Park Ice Skating Rink and Holiday Shops (Sixth Avenue and 40th Street).

Macy’s

Macys Christmas Windows

Theme: Dream...and Believe

Macy's always has two sets of windows on display, the classic "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" scenes along 34th Street and a more contemporary feature along Broadway.

This year's Broadway windows illustrate the dreams of a young boy. His dreams take him to a snow-covered landscape of shimmering crystal and shiny trees. Objects in the foreground and illuminated backgrounds change as you watch. The message is about the power of dreams, that what you believe is what is possible.

Saks Fifth Avenue

Saks Christmas Windows

Theme: Snowflake Spectacular

I'll admit that in the past I have been underwhelmed by the windows at Saks. I may have even called them "skipable" in 2011. Well, the 2013 Saks windows are fun and adorable and totally worth the visit. They tell the story of Yeti, a furry white character who makes snow flakes, with a moral of not giving up. And don't miss the short light show projected onto the side of the Saks building from 5 to 10 pm each night.

Store Location: Fifth Avenue and 49th Street (across from the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree)

Essential New York City Guide Tip
While you're in the area...Saks is located across Fifth Avenue from Rockefeller Center, making it an easy stop while enjoying the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, skating rink, and the rest of the decorations in Rock Center. Beware that these windows attract large crowds due to this location.

Bloomingdale’s

Bloomingdales Christmas Windows

Theme: All Wrapped Up in Bloomingdale's

The Bloomingdale's windows exhibit shoppers around the world. The characters in each window are toting their little, medium, and big brown bags - on a gondola in Italy or on bikes in China for example. Even the Queen of England herself has made enough purchases to fill her horse-drawn carriage with brown bags! It's a cute tribute to shopping with pleasant uplifting music to go along.

Bergdorf Goodman

Bergdorf Goodman Christmas Windows

Theme: Holidays on Ice

Why celebrate just one holiday when you can honor a whole year of holidays? The Bergdorf Goodman windows present an interesting tribute to a range of holidays, including Valentine's Day, 4th of July, and Halloween. Even Arbor Day and Mardi Gras get a shout-out! Christmas is notably missing, but the Bergdorf Goodman windows are traditionally not Christmas-y, so this isn't a surprise.

Barneys

Barneys Christmas Windows

Theme: A New York Holiday

Barneys has once again gone the route of using the windows to promote an in-store collection created in collaboration with a celebrity. This year, they've teamed up with Jay Z. Outside the store, you'll see fancy light patterns and some kind of futuristic looking sleigh-mobile. What does this have to do with the spirit of the holidays? Nothing, it seems.

Store Location: 660 Madison Avenue at 61st Street

If you don't have time to see them all...

The window displays at Saks, Lord & Taylor, and Macy’s have nice Christmas themes with scenes that move and change in front of your eyes. Plus they are kid-friendly. Bloomingdales also gets a nod from us this year, although location-wise it's a little farther from other holiday attractions.
