Super Bowl XVIII

The 2014 Super Bowl will take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. New York and New Jersey will play hosts to the event, which will be the first ever to be held outdoors in cold weather.

Super Bowl Boulevard is a wintry NFL-themed event centered around Times Square from January 29th through February 1st. Attractions include an eight lane toboggan run!

Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

Going strong since the 1877, this longest running dog show features canine athletes competing for the prestigious Best in Show award. The Westminster Kennel Club is dedicated to the sport of purebred dogs.

February Concerts at Madison Square Garden

Madison Square Garden, in the heart of New York City, is one of the city's most well-known venues. Besides being home to the Knicks and Rangers, MSG hosts concerts throughout the year.

Since MSG is located above a major transportation hub (Penn Station), it is very easy to get to using public transportation. By subway, take the A, C, E, 1, 2, or 3 trains to 34th Street/Penn Station. Amtrack, Long Island Railroad, and New Jersey Transit trains all come in to Penn Station.

The two local NHL teams are the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils. The Rangers play in Madison Square Garden. The Devils play at Prudential Center, which is in New Jersey but accessible by public transportation from Manhattan.

New York City Ballet

New York City Ballet's winter season is in full swing, featuring pieces by Balanchine and others.

Copellia, a classic comic ballet that was updated by Balanchine in 1974, presents a tale of two romantically involved villagers and their neighbor who invents a life-sized dancing doll.

Other NYC Ballet performances in the month of February include Scenic Delight and 20th Century Violin Concertos.

Chinese New Year

The year of the wooden horse is upon us and there are two fun ways to celebrate:

Firecracker Ceremony and Cultural Festival

Date and Time: January 31, 2014, 11 am - 3 pm
Location: Roosevelt Park, at the corner of Grand and Forsyth Streets

This event rings in the 2013 Chinese Lunar New Year. Besides firecrackers, the event also features cultural activities like singing, dancing, and a parade through Chinatown.

Location: Along the main streets of Chinatown

Floats, marching bands, and performers take to the streets of Chinatown. It's the largest parade of it's kind on the East Coast.

New York City Museums

Metropolitan Museum of Art

February is a cold month and therefore a good time for being inside one of New York City's famous museums. There is an outstanding selection to choose from.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) is one of the foremost art museums in the world. The masterpieces at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) do not disappoint, and at the Guggenheim, the building itself is part of the attraction.

If you have kids, they are sure to enjoy the dinosaur bones and animal displays at the Museum of Natural History.
