My mom was visiting and we decided to see Mamma Mia! I had wanted to see this musical for a long time and I was sure we would like the music since we were familiar with many of the songs. For my mom, it was a throw-back to the '70s!
Mamma Mia! is an upbeat, colorful, and entertaining musical. The songs are familiar and the dance numbers make you want to jump out of your seat.
The musical is based on songs by ABBA, a popular Swedish pop group from the 1970s. It has familiar hit songs such as, "Dancing Queen," "Take a Chance on Me," and "SOS."
The setting is on a Greek island. Twenty-year-old Sophie is preparing for her wedding and wants to invite her father, whom she has never met, to walk her down the aisle.
She discovers through reading her mother's diary that she has not one but three possible fathers. She decides to invite them all.
The subject matter isn't nearly as serious as it sounds. Instead, it's rather light and playful, with lots of amusing exchanges among the characters: Sophie, her mom, their best friends, and the three men, all of whom have arrived on the island for the wedding.
Overall the Mamma Mia musical was a very enjoyable performance. The catchy tunes really made the show and the actors were funny and had great timing with each other. Even my husband, who came along with us, thought it was a good show.
After the final scene, the cast came back out onto the stage in flashy costumes to perform some of the musical's hit songs. They encouraged the audience to sing and dance along.
Bottom Line: Lighthearted and humorous, popular hit music, energetic and entertaining performance
